The Abductor ...
- Usually female.
- Usually overweight
- Generally no prior criminal record.
- Usually gainfully employed.
- While appearing normal, likely to be emotionally immature and compulsive.
- Suffers from low self-esteem.
- May rely on manipulation and deceit as the backbone of personal relationships.
- Wishes to replace a lost infant or to experience a "vicarious birthing" of a child she is unable to conceive.
- Usually has given birth to at least one child.
- May be married or cohabiting although the spouse/cohabitant is not an accomplice.
- Demonstrates the capability to love and provide good care for the infant.
- Nesting instincts are exhibited by announcing "phantom" pregnancy and purchasing items for the baby as an expectant mother would prepare for an impending birth.
- Offender made themselves known and achieved a familiarity with hospital personnel and even the victim's parents.
- Usually will visit the nursery prior to the abduction asking detailed questions about hospital procedures and unit layout.
- May visit more than one hospital to assess security measures and explore infant populations.
- May not target a particular infant but snatch the most available.
- Seldom stray from the community from which the child was taken.
... And The Victim
- Usually seven days old or younger.
- Is perceived by the abductor as their newborn.
- The race/skin colour of the abductor and the infant is usually the same or reflects that of the abductor's companion.
